This black canvas tote bag features a diagram from neurophysiologist Geoffrey Sonnabend's three volume work, Obliscence, Theories of Forgetting and the Problem of Matter. Sonnabend postulated that each memory event is an illusion that emerges from the interaction between a static Cone of Obliscense and a moving Plane of Experience (as pictured). Their inevitable disengagement, he believed, suggests that forgetting, not remembering, is the inevitable outcome of all experience.

The reverse side of the bag is inscribed with a direct quote from Sonnabend's text. He writes: "We, amnesiacs all, condemned to live in an eternally fleeting present, have created the most elaborate of human constructions, memory, to buffer ourselves against the intolerable knowledge of the irreversible passage of time and the irretrievability of its moments and events."

Perfectly sized for books, the 100% cotton tote measures 13 x 14 x 3-inches with straps that fit comfortably over your shoulder.
