The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Information is pleased to present an evening of Greek Rebetika and dance music performed by Heather Lockie, Eve Elliot, and Dan Cantrell.

Rebetika was the musical parlance of outcast and persecuted Greeks at the turn of the 20th century. Originally played in urban secret hash dens, its lyrics often referenced prison stays, police violence, and of course torrid love affairs. The Hashy Ramblers will lovingly render these tunes as a trio with a few special guests moonlighting on clarinet, percussion, or belly dancing.

Emmy-winning composer and virtuoso accordionist Dan Cantrell is celebrated for his deep immersion in the expressive musical traditions of Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Romani culture. His highly acclaimed, genre-blending musicality now lends its unique voice to the passion and grit of Greek Rebetika.

Eve Elliot is a pianist and multi-instrumentalist. She specializes in ragtime and early jazz, but has enjoyed playing Greek music since being exposed to it at the Oregon music festival Balkanalia! in 2016.

Heather Lockie is a Los Angeles-based composer, performer, and painter who creates graphic score, soundscape, song, installation, improvisation, and through-composed works. Often using stringed instruments, voice, and found objects, Lockie’s work stretches from ensemble and solo performances to formal string arrangements for herself and for others’ music to realizing her own graphic scores in performance.
