This frequency is generated by the ear itself: a
so-called “distortion product otoacoustic emission” (DPOAE), also
referred to in musicology as “Tartini tone”.

By arranging the tones from his ears in a composition and playing them
to an audience, the artist evokes further distortion effects in the ears
of his listeners. At first, each new tone can only be perceived
"intersubjectively": inside the head of each one in the audience.
Kirkegaard artificially reproduces this tone and introduces it,
"objectively", into his composition. When combined with another
distorting frequency, it will create another tone... until, step by
step, a pattern of descending tonal structure emerges whose spiral form
mirrors the composition of resonant spectra in the human cochlea.

To read more about LABYRINTHITIS, point your browser to http://fonik.dk/works/labyrinthitis.html

Jacob Kirkegaard is an artist with an interest in the scientific and
aesthetic aspects of resonance, time and hearing. Flatland is a two dimensional world peopled by geometric shapes -- points, lines, squares, and circles -- who learn that the universe consists of more than their single plane. In the tradition of the Victorian Toy Theater, the opera is staged upon a large tabletop, giving the effect of a performance viewed through the wrong end of a telescope. FLATLAND, composed and co-performed by esteemed male soprano Randall Wong, juxtaposes the grand and the microscopically absurd, and collides Victorian stagecraft and illusion with modern toys and technology.

Friday, January 26th: 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, January 27th: 3:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.
Sunday, January 28th: 3:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology
9341 Venice Boulevard
Culver City, CA 90232

$15 General admission / $10 Museum members, students, seniors, active service personnel

Nota Bene: FLATLAND will be staged in the Tula Tea Room. Like Fred Van Eps -- the gifted banjoist who recorded hundreds of cylinders and 78 rpm records between 1897 and 1927 -- who mastered his instrument by listening to earlier recordings, Mr. Ventresco has developed a repertoire of songs learned by listening to wax cylinders and shellac records of the acoustic era. For over twenty years, San Franciscans have heard Craig Ventresco’s evocative guitar playing on street corners and in cafes. Its sound is magical, especially as plucked, strummed, and tapped by Julian Kytasty... Kytasty represents an unbroken link with a buried historical tradition. Kobzari were blind singers who travelled through Ukraine in the pre-Soviet days: Stalin and his friends regarded them as dangerously nationalist and did their best to abolish their tradition--sometimes by summary execution, sometimes by "re-education". As a result the kobzar repertoire was largely lost. But not quite: Kytasty's father and grandfather continued to play and sing it, and Kytasty also found one of the last great kobzari, Heorhiy Tkachenko, who gave him many tutorials before his death aged 95 in 1993." --Michael Church, BBC

ALL RESERVATIONS ARE WILL-CALL.

No tickets will be mailed to you.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of the performance cannot be refunded.

Please address queries to events@mjt.org. The album was Taussig's lone recorded offering outside of two cuts that appeared on a compilation which also included John Fahey (whose Takoma label released it), Max Ochs, [Bukka White,] and Robbie Basho. In other words, Taussig was among the most obscure talents the genre ever produced. . . . but he never recorded again. Until 2012, that is. After 47 years, Taussig's sophomore recording, Fate Is Only Twice, was issued by Tompkins Square. While his debut featured a few originals alongside blues and folk standards, this ten-tune set includes all originals. After all this time, Taussig's imagination remains rich and fertile, and his ambition to express it on his guitar is abundant. His darkly impressionistic playing style is full of nuance, expansive harmonic articulation, and a signature sense of lyric invention. . . . His compositions and his improvisations show a nearly limitless imagination that pushes at the boundaries of traditional forms without breaking them (not as easy as it seems). Fate Is Only Twice was a long time coming, but was certainly worth the wait." --Thom Jurek, AllMusic

The evening will comprise Harry Taussig's first ever public performance in his home state of California and second public performance since his Austin, TX debut in April.

ALL RESERVATIONS ARE WILL-CALL.

No tickets will be mailed to you.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of the performance cannot be refunded.

Please address queries to events@mjt.org. He has performed and recorded with Bo Grumpus and Janet Klein, and is well known for his extensive contributions to the soundtrack to the documentary CRUMB.
