The bağlama is a lute instrument of Turkic and Central Asian origin. Identifiable by its long, slender neck and teardrop shaped body, the bağlama is deeply ingrained in Anatolian culture, along with its traditional champion, the âşık, a traveling minstrel. The instrument is cherished and, by some, considered sacred.

Sevilay Çınar will be performing various traditional styles on the bağlama, the sounds of which have accompanied warriors into battle, stirred the spirits of remote peasant villages, and occupied a central role in many communal and religious ceremonies.

Ms. Çınar is a performer and teacher of the bağlama. As a musicologist, she has written a dissertation on contemporary female âşıklar. Her research has led her to seek out and record the work of female âşıklar across Turkey for an album released on Kalan Müzik.

Nota Bene: Ms. Çınar will perform in the Tula Tearoom. Due to the unique restrictions of the space, we shall not be able to seat latecomers once the performance has started.

No tickets will be mailed to you.
Cancellations made within 48 hours of the performance cannot be refunded.
