The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Information is very pleased to announce a program about musical deaths throughout the ages performed with voice, viola, bass viol, hurdy gurdy and other instruments by Laura Steenberge, Heather Lockie and Mustafa Walker.
A program about the many imaginary, impossible and innovative deaths from folklore and mythology that directly relate to a musical performance. Using musical repertoire spanning Medieval dance, Renaissance and Classical song, American and British folk music and experimental sound the musicians will demonstrate the song of the sirens, the untimely death of a wedding musician, the music of the spheres as they are heard in the afterlife, and the sound enchanted instruments that resonate beyond the veil, among others. Laura Steenberge is a performer and composer in Los Angeles who researches connections between music and language. Her work is about nonsense and the boundaries of knowledge and is influenced by mythology, folk music, psycholinguistics, acoustics and medieval Byzantine chant. She makes use of viola da gamba, harmonica, bells, tubes, paper, objects, voice and text to create works in traditional concert settings and site-specific locations.
Inspired by the instrument building technology from the Age of Enlightenment, Renaissance ceremonial magic, Greek tuning theory, mensural notation, and calligraphy, K C M Walker seeks to produce work exploring ritual in musical performance, the mysteries of sound, and the magic in objects, actions, and spaces. He improvises and practices medieval and renaissance repertoire for the hurdy gurdy, bass viol, electric bass, lute, brass and woodwinds, hoping to discover their hidden voices through altered tuning practices, extended techniques, and long form improvisation.
Heather Lockie is a performer-composer, teaching artist and visual artist. She plays viola, uses the piano, writes songs, plays in some bands, writes and arranges music for herself and for other people, teaches music, gardens, paints. This spring she sat in a tunnel for a long time in the mountains and sang a lot, and then painted some pictures which made some music that people performed in the tunnel.
