Remembrance of Things Past, Volume I: Swann's Way & Within a Budding Grove  is composed of the first two novels from Marcel Proust's magnum opus, In Search of Lost Time or À la recherche du temps perdu. A masterpiece of writing that pioneered stream-of-consciousness style, Remembrance of Things Past has become a cultural touchstone for ideas of memory. Set within the dreamy haze of belle epoch France, Proust's winding seven-part novel follows the narrator's recollections of childhood and adolescence, first love and affection, and musings on the passage of time-- woven into an elaborate tapestry of human experience. Swann's Way provides an excellent touchstone for the overarching motifs of the series, and Within a Budding Grove was met with enormous acclaim upon its publication, willing the Prix Goncourt in 1919. Ever since, In Search of Lost Time has come to be known as one of the great works in the Western literature cannon and the subject of scholarly contemplation and pleasurable reading alike. This new definitive French Pleiade edition was translated from the original French into English by C.K. Scott Moncreiff and Terence Kilmartin.
